Pournami Ghrita

Full Moon A2 Bilona Pure Cow Ghee

Full moon ghee, often referred to as Moon Ghee or Soma Ghee, is clarified butter that is specifically prepared during the Purnima (Full Moon).

In Vedic and Ayurvedic traditions, this timing is believed to infuse the ghee with unique properties that set it apart from standard batches.

The Significance of the Full Moon

In Ayurveda, the moon is associated with Soma, the cooling, nourishing energy that governs fluids and plant life. It is believed that:

  • High Energy: The moon’s gravitational pull and luminosity are at their peak, which is thought to enhance the medicinal properties of the butter.
  • Cooling Properties: Ghee made during this time is said to be more “Sattvic” (pure and balanced) and particularly effective at calming Pitta (heat/fire) in the body.
  • Prana: Proponents believe the ghee absorbs the moonlight, increasing its vital life force or Prana.

How It Is Made

To be considered authentic Full Moon Ghee, the process usually follows strict traditional guidelines:

  1. Grass-Fed Source: It typically starts with high-quality butter from grass-fed cows (often A2 cows).
  2. Timing: The melting and clarifying process must begin and end while the moon is full.
  3. Mantras: In many traditional settings, the maker chants specific Vedic mantras during the simmering process to further “charge” the ghee with positive vibrations.
  4. Slow Cooking: The butter is simmered over a low flame to remove water and milk solids, leaving behind pure, golden fat.

Reported Benefits

While scientifically it contains the same healthy fats (like butyric acid and Omega-3s) as regular ghee, practitioners use it for:

  • Mental Clarity: Improving memory and “Ojas” (vigor/immunity).
  • Nervous System Support: It is often used as a carrier for herbs (an Anupana) to soothe the mind.
  • Digestion: Like all ghee, it aids the digestive fire (Agni) without aggravating heat.
