Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is a microsporidian parasite that was first characterized and named from the giant or black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon.
Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is an obligate, intracellular microsporidian parasite affecting the shrimp.
No specific signs or symptoms are observed, however, growth retardation is there. Digestion and absorption are affected, resulting in poor growth and immunity.
EHP spores can remain in the water for up to 6 months, and must be tackled in the initial stage itself, to prevent further occurrences of the disease.
EHP causes growth retardation and increased size variability, and in more advanced stages, infected shrimp have soft shells and exhibit lethargy, reduced feeding and empty midguts.
EHP increases susceptibility of shrimp to Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND)
Symptoms
Symptoms: May show one or more of these signs, but the pathogen may still be present in the absence of any signs. , Disease signs at the farm, tank or pond level are unusually retarded growth in the absence of other gross signs of disease. There are no specifically distinctive gross signs of infection by EHP., Microscopic pathological signs are: in tissue sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin, hepatopancreas tubule epithelial cells show the presence of basophilic, cytoplasmic inclusions (microsporidian sporocysts) containing clusters of elliptical to somewhat ovoid spores of 1.1 ± 0.21µm by 0.6–0.7 ± 0.1µm. some times free spores released from lysed cells may be seen in the tubule lumens.
